“You?” Emily spun around, squinting in confusion when she saw who was behind her.
“It’s me, Emily,” Adela said, her makeup heavier than usual, waving with a bright, almost artificial smile. “Long time no see.”
“Do you want something?” Emily sounded cold. She’d kept up with the news about Adela’s family online. At first, she thought Adela’s dad had just broken a few rules or abused his power. But once everything came to light, the truth was so much darker. He’d misused his position dozens of times, some violations much more severe than anyone guessed. Not only did he lose his job, he was facing time in prison.
The pressure was too much for Kemp. He ended it himself.
With her father gone and her old scandals resurfacing, Adela lost her support overnight. Apex Mediaworks immediately sued to terminate her contract. The rest of the industry wanted nothing to do with her now. She was basically blacklisted.
“Just wanted to catch up,” Adela said, her smile looking sweet but feeling sharp. Emily didn’t miss the chill in her eyes, a mix of hatred and something darker hiding just beneath the surface.
“We have nothing to talk about,” Emily said flatly.
She glanced at her phone, brows knitting tighter when she realized Pam still hadn’t come back. She started moving toward the exit, wanting nothing more than to get out of the bathroom.
But when she opened the restroom door, two huge men blocked her way, their shoulders filling the doorway. She froze.
“What do you want?” Emily’s voice was low and tense as she looked back at Adela.
“You’ll find out soon enough,” Adela replied, still standing by the sinks, giving a quick look to the two men. “Go ahead.”
