Peter hit the ground hard. Ella pressed her hands over his wound, panic racing through her voice. “Just hold on, okay? I’m going to help you. I’ve got my needles, just wait…”
She never expected Peter to throw himself in front of her like that. It didn’t even feel real.
Peter shook his head, barely able to keep his eyes open. He knew it was over, that there was no coming back from this.
He stared at Ella, pain and regret swimming in his eyes. There was so much he wanted to say, but when he tried, only a broken, rasping whisper came out. “I… am… sorry…”
His hand slipped from hers, falling limp. Then he closed his eyes and was gone.
Ella stared at him, refusing to believe it. “Stay with me. Please, Peter, you can’t go. I can save you, just hold on. Please…”
Rachel crouched down and pressed her fingers under Peter’s nose. She waited, but there was nothing. No breath at all.
Peter was dead.
He’d died right in front of her, because of her.
Ella’s eyes filled with shock as she looked up at Rachel. “Why? Why would you do this? You wanted to kill me? I’m your daughter. I’m your own daughter!”
She shook her head, still trying to make sense of it. Rachel had never liked her, had always favored Jessa, but Ella never thought her mother would actually try to kill her. How could a mother do something like this?
If Peter hadn’t stepped in, she’d be the one lying on the floor right now.
Jessa didn’t shed a single tear for Peter. She just wanted Moss to be her dad, and the only thing she felt was annoyance. Why did Peter have to get in the way? They were so close—if he hadn’t interfered, everything would be perfect now.
“Mom, you got the wrong person,” Jessa snapped. “Finish it, hurry. This is your only chance. Do it now, before it’s too late.”
Rachel got up, her grip tight around the blood-stained knife. She glared at Ella, her voice shaking with hate. “I never liked you. In fact, I wish you’d never been born. So just give up. You’re done!”
