Ella could hardly believe it. For years, she’d watched Peter dote on Jessa, treating her like the most precious thing in the world. But now, everything had flipped. He was calling Jessa a liar. A fraud. What on earth could Jessa have done?
Ella stared at Peter, her brows knit in confusion. “Jessa’s a liar? She’s been hiding something? What did she do?”
Peter nodded, urgent, and started tracing words into Ella’s palm. “She’s not…”
Not what? Not who?
Peter’s hand moved, about to write the truth, but before he could finish, the door swung open with a sharp click. Jessa and Rachel walked in.
Jessa strode straight to Ella, shoving her aside. “Ella, what are you doing? Why are you hovering near my dad? Are you trying to hurt him?”
Ella stood up, fixing Jessa with a steady gaze. “Why are you so worked up, Jessa?”
Jessa shot Ella a glare, then turned to Peter and grabbed his hand, squeezing tight. “Dad, as soon as I heard you were in the hospital, I rushed over. I was so worried about you.”
Peter’s eyes were cold, full of disgust, and he tried to pull away, but Jessa wouldn’t let go.
She gripped his hand even tighter. “Dad, don’t worry about me. I’m fine now. The poison’s gone. I’m all better.”
Rachel moved closer too, putting on a gentle face. “Peter, Jessa’s been so worried about you. She just wants to take care of you. You’re going to get better, I know it.”
Jessa whipped her head toward Ella. “Why are you still here? Leave. My dad doesn’t need you. He needs me.”
Peter tried to speak, mouth opening and closing, but no sound came. Rachel stepped in, blocking Ella’s view of Peter’s face.
