Jessa was always about herself. All these years, Peter had done everything for her, loving her like she was his own daughter. He spoiled her, protected her, made her the center of his world. But she never cared about him. Anyone or anything that got in her way, she wanted gone, no matter what.
“Peter should have stayed in that coma. But then Grandma Jill brought Ella in to do acupuncture, and Peter woke up. We have to figure out a way to keep your secret from coming out,” someone said, urgency in their voice.
Jessa’s eyes flashed with malice. “Let’s just get rid of Ella.”
Rachel hesitated, caught off guard. Jessa pressed on. “Ella is the root of all our problems. If she’s gone, everything that was hers will be mine.”
Right now, all Jessa wanted was for Ella to disappear for good.
Rachel nodded slowly, and her own gaze darkened. “Ella should have died a long time ago. We dumped her in the countryside when she was a kid, and somehow she survived. It’s time for her to finally get out of our lives.”
Jessa looked at Rachel, her tone cold and commanding. “You do it. You kill Ella yourself.”
Rachel stared at her, stunned. “Jessa, you want me to do it? Me, with my own hands?”
“Who else? It’s too risky to get someone else involved. My dad and David are always around, and if we slip up, everything will come out. Only you can do this. Mom, you’re my real mother. You love me, right? You’d do anything for me, wouldn’t you?”
Jessa, who used to look at Rachel with nothing but contempt, now clung to her hand, her voice pleading and desperate.
Rachel’s resolve wavered. This was her daughter, her flesh and blood. “Alright, Jessa. Leave it to me. I’ll take care of it.”
Jessa beamed and hugged Rachel tight. “Thank you, Mom. I knew you loved me. I love you too. Nobody in this world treats me better than you do.”
Rachel wrapped her arms around Jessa, holding her close. “Silly girl. Everything I do is for you.”
But the happiness faded from Jessa’s face, replaced by a chill that ran deep. Ella had to die. Peter had to die. And Rachel… Rachel had to go too. Jessa had already decided. Rachel knew too much about her past. The only way to keep her secret safe was to silence Rachel forever.
...
Ella made her way back to Peter’s hospital room. He was slumped in his wheelchair, unable to move or speak, looking so small and helpless as a nurse fussed over him.
