Lilly stopped in her tracks. Was he really standing outside her door? Why did he come here?
“Jace, you should leave. You’re married now. You have a wife. I don’t want to get mixed up with a married man. That’s my boundary.”
“Lilly, this marriage is not what you think.”
Lilly’s heart skipped a beat. What did he mean, not what she thought? Then what was it?
“Lilly, please, just give me a chance to explain. Give us one more chance, okay?” Jace’s voice was soft, almost pleading.
Her fingers curled tightly around her phone. She couldn’t deny it—her heart was wavering. Was there more to his marriage to Lilian than she knew? She still didn’t understand why he had suddenly married her.
The truth was, Lilly still loved Jace. She took a shaky breath. “Alright, I’ll come out.”
She hung up and headed for the door.
Outside, Jace’s eyes lit up with hope. When Lilly came out, he’d finally explain everything. Maybe then things would go back to how they were.
But before she could reach him, a black van shot down the street and screeched to a stop. Two huge men in black suits jumped out and grabbed Jace.
Jace stared at them. “Who are you?”
“We’re here to finish you off.”
He tried to pull away, but moving only made the pain in his stomach worse. Blood started seeping through his shirt. The bodyguards yanked him into the van.
Jace caught a glimpse of Lilly stepping outside. He banged on the window, desperate. “Lilly! Lilly!”
A sudden stab of pain shot through his chest. He looked down and saw a knife buried deep in his heart. Blood ran from the corner of his mouth. Through blurred vision, he tried to call her name one last time. “Lilly… Lilly…”
