He lied to her again.
Lilly’s tears fell, hot and fast. The disappointment was crushing. Even now, at this point, he was still lying. Why? Her voice shook with sobs, barely able to get the words out.
Jace heard the crying on the other end and tensed up. “Lilly, what’s wrong? Are you crying? Did something happen?”
All eyes in the room turned to Jace and Lilian. They were the couple everyone had come to see, but now, right at the altar, Jace had stopped everything to answer his phone. Guests started whispering, glancing back and forth, unsure what was going on.
Lilian stepped closer and tugged gently at his sleeve, her voice low and urgent. “Jace, everyone is watching. Can’t this wait until after the ceremony?”
Outside the doors, Lilly caught a glimpse of the scene inside. She pressed the phone closer and choked out, “Jace, what are you so busy with? Are you marrying Lilian right now?”
Jace’s heart skipped a beat. He sucked in a sharp breath. “Lilly, you know? Who told you?”
“I’m right at the door.”
For a second, his mind went blank. He looked up and there she was, standing just outside. Through a blur of tears, Lilly stared at him. Their eyes met across the room. For a moment, it felt like the world had hit pause.
Jace never imagined he would see Lilly at his wedding.
He had been keeping everything from her, hoping she wouldn’t find out, just needing to make it through today. But now she was actually here.
Lilly’s voice trembled as she cried, “Jace, why are you marrying Lilian? I don’t believe you’d do this. Just give me one reason, any reason, and I’ll believe you. Please.”
“Lilly, I…”
Before he could continue, Brandon stood up, irritation written all over his face. “Jace, hurry up and get on with the ceremony.”
Just then, a man in black rushed over to Brandon. “Brandon, the important guest has arrived.”
