Lilian’s lips curled into a victorious smile.
Jace and Lilian stepped up to the officiant again. The officiant turned to Jace and asked, “Jace, do you take Lilian to be your wife, to stay by her side for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for the rest of your lives?”
Jace looked straight at him. “I do.”
Those words echoed in Lilly’s ears, so loud and final that everything else faded away.
Lucas leaned in close, his voice sharp and cold. “See, Lilly? Jace is really marrying Lilian. He never loved you. You were the only one holding on. You did everything for him and he never wanted you.”
Lilly’s tears fell, heavy and silent. Inside, the officiant was announcing, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may exchange rings.”
A ring bearer brought them a pair of diamond rings. Lilian slid one onto Jace’s finger, her hands steady and slow.
Jace picked up the other ring and gently placed it onto Lilian’s finger.
Brandon started clapping, and soon everyone joined in. People called out their congratulations.
For Lilian, this was the happiest moment she could imagine. She wrapped her arms around Jace, holding him tight.
At the doorway, Lilly watched them, her heart shattering. She turned away, step by step, and left the hall behind.
She was gone.
Lucas hurried after her. “Lilly, are you done chasing after him now? Jace is married. You need to let him go.”
He kept talking. “Look, I know I used to be with Sarah, but that’s over. You and Jace are finished. Why don’t we give it a try? I promise I’ll treat you well.”
Lilly’s world spun and then everything went black.
Lucas caught her before she hit the ground. “Lilly. Hey, Lilly, what’s wrong?”
Inside, after the ceremony, Brandon was all smiles. “Jace, you’re officially my son-in-law. You and Lilian need to build a good life together from now on.”
Jace nodded, hiding the ache inside. “Yeah, Mr. Whitman.”
