When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 346

Her mom had actually said it herself that she’d rather get a divorce than keep Carrie. Hearing those words felt like a punch to the gut. First, it made Carrie want to cry, and then it just made her angry.

But no matter what, she couldn’t really leave her mom.

Over the past few days, Carrie’s allergies had cleared up. The chaotic, dark thoughts in her head had started to fade.

Her therapist had explained it in a way she could understand. People have lots of roles in life, whether you’re a mom, a dad, or a daughter. They’re just roles, not entire identities.

Nobody’s perfect, so no one can ever be perfect in any of those roles. Carrie couldn’t be a perfect daughter. She made mistakes. Sometimes she said the wrong thing or did something she shouldn’t have.

But not being perfect didn’t mean she was wrong or bad.

Everyone has their own needs. If you can’t take care of yourself, how are you supposed to play these roles for anyone else?

The most important thing is being yourself first.

A mother can choose to sacrifice for her daughter because she loves her. But a daughter, loving her mom, should also try to understand her choices.

Carrie was still a kid, so the therapist kept things simple. But the words stuck with her.

Her mom would risk her own life for her, but all Carrie could think about was that one hurtful sentence her mom had said in anger.

Deep down, Carrie knew that even if her parents split up… her mom would never leave her behind.

Once she realized that, Carrie remembered being in the hospital room. Nelly had tried to talk to her, to comfort her, but Carrie had been so cold, so stubborn.

She’d promised Nelly she’d try to work on her temper, to talk things out instead of shutting down.

Thinking about it now, all the energy seemed to drain out of her. She just felt like a sad, squishy little bun. Still a mama’s girl, through and through.
