When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 375

Nelly sat there, lost in thought. She knew her plan still had holes. She needed a lawyer. Most important, she had to make sure that even if she couldn’t win custody of Carrie, her daughter would still be safe and cared for, no matter what.

Brody felt like he might actually explode. He fought to keep his anger in check, forcing a cold chuckle. “Nelly, why don’t you look a little closer at what you’re holding?”

His words snapped her back. She looked down at the agreement in her hands. It wasn’t their divorce papers. It was just a sample from some case file.

“I’ve already talked to a lawyer. If we can’t come to terms, a case like ours, with a prenup and all these assets, could drag on forever. I could keep it going for years if I wanted to.”

Brody’s face looked drained, his voice softer than usual, but his words were as sharp as ever. He was ready to dig in for a long, ugly fight. All his so-called offers and compromises before had just been bait.

Nelly’s mouth fell open, but then she couldn’t help but smile a little. She almost underestimated him. Brody was a sly old fox. He could prentend to love her when he wanted, but deep down, he was even more calculating than she’d thought. The longer he kept her tied up in this marriage, the longer he could hold onto the money and keep her under his thumb.

“Brody, I guess you don’t care about Sheila as much as you say you do.”

“I told you already. There’s nothing between me and her.”

Nelly slammed her hand on the table and shot to her feet. “Don’t push me, Brody. I’m not the same Nelly you used to know. I swear, I will ruin you if you keep this up.”
