He glanced at Sheila, his eyes shadowed and unreadable. Sheila understood exactly what he meant. She was already sure that Brody would never tell Nelly the truth about Finn. Finn’s ashes had gone missing. There was no way Finn could actually be alive. Brody cared too much about Nelly now. He would never let her spiral deeper into despair by chasing after something so flimsy.
Sheila made a show of speaking up for Brody, but with the two of them acting so secretive, never saying things outright, how could Nelly not get the wrong idea?
The whole thing only made Nelly more furious. She could feel anger burning in her chest. They were treating her like she was clueless, like she didn’t deserve the truth.
Even so, Nelly kept her head. She pulled out her phone, and before either of them on the bed could react, she snapped a picture. The flash was blinding in the dim room.
“Nelly!” Brody’s voice cut through the air, cold and sharp. He realized what she’d done, and there was a warning in his tone. “Stop this. I’ll talk to you about tonight later.”
“Oh?” Nelly held up her phone, showing him the crystal-clear video. She gave him a crooked smile. “Sorry, Brody. I’m not doing this for you. We aren’t even divorced yet, and here you are, half-dressed in our home with another woman. I could call the cops, you know. Or maybe you’d rather wake up to see yourself on tomorrow’s business headlines? Let me think... the title could be something like, ‘Garland Inc. CEO Caught Cheating by His Wife in His Own Study.’ Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?”
“Nelly!” Brody started coughing, his chest tightening like something inside was about to break.
Sheila’s face twisted with anger and worry. She glared at Nelly, her voice losing all its earlier sweetness. “Brody has done so much for you, and he’s really not well right now. Don’t you think you’re going a little too far?”
“He’s done so much for me? You mean the silent treatment, cheating, and now bringing you into our house? And I’m the one going too far? Fine. That’s exactly who I am. I’m not backing down.”
