“So, after everything Jonah’s done to you, you still can’t move on?”
Nancy’s ears went hot, like she’d just been caught red-handed. But she fired back without missing a beat. “No way. I wish he and Felix would both just disappear forever.”
“Come on. You don’t really want revenge. You just want him to feel sorry, to regret what he did.”
“That’s why you agreed to work with me so quickly, isn’t it? Jonah’s always been a big part of it.”
Nelly didn’t bother to sugarcoat things anymore. She was here to lay everything out.
Nancy went still. The last bit of spark in her eyes faded. Everything suddenly made sense. Jonah would rather be hated than let anything happen to Nelly.
“You’re right,” Nancy admitted quietly. “I started this just to get back at him. He cares about you, so I wanted to make life hard for you. I never really believed you could help me get revenge on Felix anyway.”
Nancy’s trust in friends had shattered the night Jonah betrayed her.
She stood up so fast her chair scraped the floor. “I’m done. Our partnership is over.”
“Alright, but don’t forget what we agreed. If you break the contract, you owe me ten times the original fee in penalties. I’ve done the math. All your assets wouldn’t even cover it. Maybe Rudy and Britney can help you out?”
Nelly’s voice stayed calm. She slowly pulled their contract out of her bag, flipping through the thick stack of papers.
The soft rustling sound grated on Nancy’s nerves, a cruel reminder of just how badly she’d lost. She couldn’t get justice for her mom. She couldn’t get away from Felix.
Jonah was right. She wasn’t even worthy of being the daughter of the Watson family.
Nancy turned around and stared at Nelly, unable to believe what she was hearing. Her fists clenched so tight her nails dug into her palms. “Nelly, are you trying to humiliate me?”
“Why shouldn’t I? Isn’t that what you think of me anyway?”
Nelly didn’t look up. Her tone was icy. “At least I keep my promises. At least I have a conscience.”
