She didn’t even hesitate. She just canceled every single contract, and not with small brands either. These were major, top-tier partnerships.
“Nelly, are you out of your mind? You did all that… for me?” Nancy’s voice wavered, disbelief written all over her face. “Was that really necessary?”
Nelly already knew the real story. She knew this mess had started because Nancy broke their promise. But Nelly’s tone stayed calm as she watched her.
“I didn’t do it for you. I was just sticking to the deal.” Her eyes were steady, almost too steady. “When it comes to business, everyone measures what they’ll gain or lose, but the way I do it isn’t the same as the rest of the Watson family.”
Nancy’s mind went completely blank. She stared at Nelly, searching for any hint of hesitation, any crack in her calm, but there was nothing.
After a few seconds, Nancy let out a sarcastic laugh. It sounded hollow, and before she could stop herself, tears slipped down her cheeks. Her face twisted, caught somewhere between shock and amusement. “Nelly, what are you even doing? Is this your way of being some kind of idealist?”
“Do you really think this makes you look cool or loyal? Let me tell you, people like you are just jokes in the Watson family.”
She remembered when she used to hope for things, when she thought life could actually be good. But in reality, true loyalty didn’t exist. All that mattered was self-interest. If someone seemed loyal, it was just because the stakes weren’t high enough yet. Nelly tried to carve out a place in the Watson family, dreaming of inheriting Christopher’s fortune, but it was just fantasy.
“I still don’t want to go against what I believe in.” Nelly’s voice was soft but sure. “If holding onto what matters to me makes other people laugh, why should I care?”
Nancy felt something shift inside her. If anyone else had said that, she would’ve thought they were either lying to themselves or clinging to something hopeless. But Nelly was different. Nelly really didn’t seem to care what anyone else thought. There was a kind of wild innocence about her, a stubbornness that didn’t care about consequences. Even if she knew she’d lose, she still did things her way.
Suddenly, Nancy understood why Jonah was different when it came to Nelly. It’s hard not to be drawn to someone who still believes in ideals, even if everyone says they’re doomed.
