The room felt heavy, like the air itself was holding its breath. Nancy glanced down, a trace of sarcasm flickering in her eyes before she changed the subject.
“I know I’ve been a hassle for you lately. Honestly, I didn’t expect you to dig up Vincent’s secrets so fast…” Her voice sounded offhand, but her next question gave her away. “Did Jonah and Felix help you?”
Nelly drew in a quiet breath. After Jonah told her about Nancy’s past, everything made sense—why Nancy was so determined to burn it all down, why she never reached out for help, why she faced all the public backlash without defending herself. This was her way of showing Felix and Jonah she was done with her old life. The more reckless she acted, the more she proved she couldn’t be controlled by anyone. To ask for help, to play the victim, to show her scars, would have been the real humiliation.
“It wasn’t them.” Nelly’s eyes stayed cool. “I have a friend who’s a private investigator. Digging up dirty secrets is what he does best.”
Gregory really was the top guy in the business. Nelly had barely reached out before he delivered everything she needed, even setting up a leak for the info. He wasn’t cheap, though.
Nancy’s mouth twitched. She’d let her imagination get the better of her again. Felix wouldn’t lift a finger for her, and Jonah only ever gave warnings.
“Sounds like your friend’s got skills,” Nancy said, letting out a tired little laugh as she leaned back on the sofa, like she just couldn’t be bothered to keep talking.
“That’s not the point. What matters is, I get it now. From here on out, we need to keep our distance from Jonah and Felix.”
Nancy’s heart skipped. She stared at Nelly, shocked. Nelly just took a sip of water, giving her a look that said she’d figured everything out.
“What did Jonah tell you?” Nancy sat up, her voice suddenly sharp.
“He basically told me everything,” Nelly replied, raising her eyebrows a little.
