The Mocked Miss’s Hidden Crowns novel Chapter 1474

"Emily..."

Jarrod called after her, stubbornly refusing to give up.

But Kenneth stepped in front of him, tall and unyielding, blocking the way. He looked down, his voice cold. "Stay away from her from now on."

"Says who?" Jarrod stopped and stared right back at him, his voice steady. "Emily isn't anybody's property, Kenneth. You need to back off."

"Maybe she's not now, but that doesn't mean she'll never be." Kenneth spoke lazily, a faint smirk pulling at his lips. "Besides, she's not into kids who haven’t even grown up yet. Don't waste your time."

The words stung, but Jarrod didn’t look away. He shot back, his face tight. "Maybe she doesn't like me, but she’s definitely not interested in you either."

"You've known Emily for years, Kenneth. You work together, see each other every day." Jarrod couldn't help himself—he pressed on, his words sharp as he noticed a shift in Kenneth's eyes. "If she wanted you, don’t you think it would've happened by now?"

"You don't know anything. We'll see." Kenneth’s hands curled into fists, but his face stayed calm, not giving anything away.

He turned and walked off, but as soon as he had his back to Jarrod, all that calm just… vanished. Those words dug deep. If she wanted you, it would've happened already.

Kenneth looked up and saw Emily through the car window, sitting in the passenger seat looking so demure and unreachable. Some of the tightness in his chest finally eased a bit.

So what if she didn't like him before? What mattered was whether she’d like him from now on.

He slid into the driver's seat and rolled up the window, shutting out the outside world. The car suddenly felt suffocatingly quiet, the kind of silence that made every second crawl by.
