Mortified, she could barely look at Jason. She hadn’t meant for this to happen. All she wanted was some distance from him, but somehow, she’d ended up crashing straight into his arms.

She scrambled out of his hold and put some space between them, her face burning. “I... I’m sorry,” Lilly mumbled, wishing she could disappear.

Jason watched her fidget, his mouth curving into a half-smile as if he actually found this funny. “It’s all right,” he said lightly. “No need to freak out. Why are you so skittish?”

Lilly had no answer for that, so she just kept quiet.

He was right, anyway. They’d already broken up. She was all flustered and a mess, but he just seemed cool and indifferent, as if nothing had ever happened between them. Jason had clearly moved on.

Honestly, Lilly hated how pathetic she felt. Why couldn’t she be as put-together as he was? They were bound to run into each other once in a while, especially because of Victoria, so she might as well get used to being around him.

Taking a steadying breath, Lilly managed to say, “Sorry about that.”

Jason just grabbed a bowl and some utensils, casual as ever. “Let’s eat.”

Victoria reached for Lilly’s hand and tugged her into a chair. “Breakfast is ready, Lilly.”

“Okay,” Lilly replied, trying to sound normal.

Jason leaned over to check Victoria’s temperature. She still looked a bit feverish. “This fever just won’t quit,” Jason said, watching Victoria carefully. “I’ll stay for a few days and take care of you, all right?”

Victoria looked delighted. “Okay.”

Lilly figured there was no need for her to be here. “Victoria, since your brother’s here to look after you, I should probably head home.”

Honestly, being in the same room as Jason was just way too awkward.
