Peter opened his mouth, trying to say something. But all that came out were garbled, unrecognizable sounds. No one could figure out what he meant.
“Ella, why can’t my son speak yet?” Grandma Jill asked, her voice tense with worry.
Rachel finally let herself breathe. She’d been terrified that Peter might suddenly blurt something out and ruin everything. But he still couldn’t talk. Relief washed over her. She hurried to his side and grabbed his hand.
“Honey, are you alright? Do you need to say something to me? I’m right here. Take your time,” she said softly.
Ella watched Peter for a moment. “I’ve used acupuncture to wake him up, but he still can’t speak. He just needs some time to recover.”
Grandma Jill tried to comfort him. “Peter, it’s okay. You’ll get better soon.”
Peter’s eyes stayed red and fixed on Rachel, but he still couldn’t get the words out.
Just then, a maid burst into the room, barely able to contain her excitement. “Madam, good news!”
Grandma Jill sat up straighter. “What is it?”
The maid grinned. “Ms. Irvine is awake!”
What? Jessa was awake?
Rachel’s face lit up. “Really? Jessa’s awake? That’s amazing!”
Grandma Jill was just as happy. Jessa was the daughter of the richest man in the country, and her family’s future depended on her. “Get the car ready. I need to see Jessa right now.”
Ella frowned, a little surprised. She hadn’t even finished the antidote, but Jessa woke up on her own. Now that was interesting.
...
Back at the Irvine family estate, Jessa was already sitting up in bed. Moss hovered nearby, watching her anxiously.
“Jessa, are you feeling alright?” he asked.
Jessa looked a bit pale, but her mood was bright. She was the heiress to a fortune, and right now, she felt like she was on top of the world. She looped her arm through Moss’ and pouted playfully. “Dad, I’m still a little dizzy.”
