Victoria had heard everything Dr. Morrison just said. She had no idea, and now she felt like her whole world was collapsing.
Lilly hurried over. “Victoria, please, you have to stay calm. Your mom’s health has actually been a problem for a while.”
Tiffany hadn’t wanted Lilly to tell Victoria or her brother, Jace. Victoria’s exams were coming up soon, and it was such an important time for her.
But now, Victoria couldn’t hold back her tears. She broke down, her voice shaking. “Why is this happening? My mom has always seemed so healthy. I don’t believe it. I can’t accept it. How is it possible she only has a couple days left?”
Lilly pulled her into a hug, holding Victoria’s fragile shoulders. “Don’t be sad, Victoria. Your mom didn’t want you to know because she couldn’t stand to see you upset.”
“Lilly, we lost our dad so long ago,” Victoria cried, her voice barely above a whisper. “Mom raised us all by herself. Even though she couldn’t see, she still took such good care of us. People at school called me a kid from a single-parent family, said I didn’t have a dad. But I never felt like I was missing anything. I had my brother, and I had my mom who loved me so much. And now… now my mom is leaving me too.”
Nothing Lilly could say would make it better, so she just held Victoria close, rubbing her back and letting her cry.
Dr. Morrison spoke softly. “Lilly, we’ve already given your mom the best medicine available. You should spend as much time with her as you can over the next couple of days.”
He quietly left the room.
Victoria wiped her tears away and took a shaky breath. She didn’t want her mom to hear her crying. She needed to be strong.
“Thank you, Lilly. Every single time something happens to my family, you always show up to help us.”
Lilly squeezed Victoria’s hand, her voice gentle. She knew Victoria and Jace had a strength deep inside. Hard times would only make them grow up faster. “Victoria, has Jace shown up yet?”
