Chapter 446 Game
Mason winked at Gwen. But she acted like she didn't see it.
She was acutely aware of the underlying tension between Hugh and Bethan.
Bethan had been head-over-heels for Hugh for a long time.
She'd told Gwen every little detail of her feelings for Hugh, making it clear how much she loved him and how much she wanted to be his wife.
And Gwen had seen Hugh's commitment through everything—like the bad beating he took for wanting to marry Bethan, and the big fight with his family when the wedding got called off. All this made Gwen sure Hugh really cared about Bethan too.
Out of the blue, Gwen blurted out a question that caught Bethan off guard.
The once-lively atmosphere in the room died down right away as Bethan stood there, frozen and unable to respond immediately.
Meanwhile, Hugh, lounging on the plush sofa, was closely observing Bethan.
The moment he saw the discomfort wash over her face, his eyes clouded with disappointment.
Unconsciously, he tightened his grip on the wine glass and snapped at his sister, "Gwen, cut it out."
Gwen was about to fire back, but Mason quickly intervened.
"Drinking on our own is so dull. How about we spice things up?" he proposed with a wink.
Someone in the group quickly seconded the idea. "Let's play truth or dare! Losers have to spill the beans, or they take a shot."
Just as everyone nodded enthusiastically at the suggestion, a waiter pushed the door open and wheeled in a cart with drinks and snacks. Outside, Tristen happened to see Bethan through the half-open door.
He halted in his steps, mumbled something to his two friends, who then walked away.
Instead of entering, he simply waved and called out, "Bethan!"
"Hey, Tristen!" Bethan put down her juice glass and was about to rush out.
When she saw Tristen, the big smile on her face made Hugh furious. His back tensed up, and he gripped the glass tighter.
Mason noticed Hugh's reaction out of the corner of his eye and swiftly stepped in front of Bethan.
He walked over to the door, grabbed Tristen by the arm, and said, "Mr. Dixon, if you're not in a rush, why not join us? Have a few drinks and have some fun."
Tristen strolled right up to Hugh and extended his hand. "Hello, Mr. Cavill."
Hugh rose to his feet and shook Tristen's hand.
Their eyes locked, and there was an unspoken challenge in the air.
Bethan stood there, feeling out of place.
Ever since that night, Tristen had been dropping some rather forward remarks, and Bethan was constantly on edge, afraid he'd say something that might cause a stir.
Hugh sat back down, appearing calm on the surface but seething inside.
Tristen then turned to Yvonne, who was sitting next to Bethan, and said with a friendly smile, "Hello, mind swapping seats with me?"
Yvonne, being a bit of a gossip, gave Bethan a knowing look and quickly got up.
Tristen pulled out the chair for Bethan. "Dr. Olsen, take a seat."
Bethan took a nervous glance around the room, her eyes darting between Hugh on her left and Tristen on her right. She had an overwhelming urge to run away, but in the end, she reluctantly sat down.
Clutching her juice glass tightly, Bethan hung her head. Hugh could sense her unease from a mile away.
