Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 457

Chapter 457 No Right

Fiona watched her son steal glances at Bethan—his eyes were cautious and tender—and she felt the instinctive worry.

After a cozy family dinner, Fiona invited Bethan to stick around for a bit of a real heart-to-heart.

When eight o'clock struck in the evening, she told Hugh to drive Bethan back home.

Bethan wanted to say no, but Hugh jumped right at the idea. With Gwen in the picture, Bethan just kept her mouth shut and let it be.

Over an hour later, they pulled up in front of the Olsen family's apartment building.

Bethan unlatched her seatbelt and was about to scoot out when, out of the blue, Hugh reached over and grabbed her wrist.

Bethan's mood soured instantly. "Hugh, you forget what you promised me?"

They locked eyes in silence for a few tense seconds before Hugh slowly let go.

Hugh stared at Bethan's face. His voice was soft, like he was being careful not to upset her.

"Forget about that matcha cake. And forget all the crappy stuff from the past. Okay?"

Bethan met his gaze and gave her head a firm shake.

"All the bad that went down between us back then? You're the one who burned it into my head. It's never gonna fade away."

"Bethy," Hugh murmured, his voice thick with pain. His eyes were moist.

He just couldn't stop himself from moving closer.

Bethan whirled around to grab the door handle, but Hugh got hold of her wrist again.

Glancing back at him, she yelled, "Treating you like a brother? That's the nicest thing I can do for you."

They stared each other down.

Hugh's eyes were blood-red, a storm of pain and self-control raging behind them.

"I just need you to hang with me for a little bit. Just a short while," he pleaded.

He'd finally managed to get this close to Bethan; the thought of her leaving was unbearable.

He didn't have any funny business in mind and wouldn't force her into anything.

Just having her near made him feel like he was grounded.

Just then, Bethan's phone started blaring.

She wriggled free from Hugh's grasp and fished out her phone.

Tristen's name flashed on the screen.

In the hushed luxury of the car, the ringtone kept going.

Their eyes locked once more.

Hugh held tight to her wrist, but Bethan wriggled loose and stepped out.
