Breaking Point of Divorce (Hugh and Bethan) novel Chapter 459

Chapter 459 A Real Change

Bethan met Hugh's cautious glance and wordlessly looked away.

Had it not been for Hugh just now, her family would've been stuck in a tussle with that couple.

It was only fitting that her parents invited him to stay for lunch, so there was no need for her to put up a fight.

Upon seeing Bethan nod, Hugh gallantly opened the car door for her parents.

Once home, her parents got busy in the kitchen.

Bethan made an excuse to help out, hoping to avoid being alone with Hugh.

Meanwhile, Barry pulled Hugh into his room, asking him to solve some tricky math problems.

In the kitchen, Vincent took out the steak and cod. "Hugh and Bethy like things on the lighter side. We'll use this codfish later," he said.

Bethan let out a sigh. "Dad, this cod was for tomorrow."

Her parents' fondness for Hugh had become second nature.

They'd long treated him like a part of the Olsen family, which was one of the reasons she hadn't completely cut him off after her rebirth.

Miranda shot Bethan a look.

"Hugh doesn't come around often. Your dad and I will whip up a few extra dishes for him. We can get more cod tomorrow."

She then handed Vincent a dressed chicken. "Hugh's crazy about my roast chicken. Chop it up quick."

Watching her parents flit around happily, Bethan quietly backed out to the kitchen door.

In her memory, they'd doted on Hugh like a son all these years.

It'd be heartbreaking for them if they ever found out they'd been so good to someone who didn't appreciate it.

As Hugh emerged from Barry's room, he spotted Bethan by the kitchen door.

In the semi-open kitchen, she stood there quietly, while inside, her parents chatted as they cooked.

Hugh was transfixed. This peaceful scene used to include him, too.

Seeing Bethan turn around with a plate, Hugh stepped forward. "Need a hand?"

Bethan placed the plate on the table.

"Mr. Cavill, just chill and wait for the food. Don't mess things up for my parents."

Hugh tagged along behind Bethan to the kitchen door.

"Hugh, stay out. It's all smoky in here. You'll get your clothes dirty," Miranda chimed in.

Vincent came out with a bottle of good wine he'd been hoarding.

Hugh felt a lump in his throat. Making an excuse about using the restroom, he quickly turned away.

Bethan glanced back but didn't notice anything off.

Standing in front of the bathroom sink, Hugh stared at himself in the mirror.

He'd grown up in a home filled with constant bickering, a far cry from the warm atmosphere here.

He'd either found reasons to stay at the Olsens' place or Bethan had invited him.

Every time he came, Barry was over the moon, and her parents were as welcoming as ever, cooking up all his favorites and treating him like family.

And he'd soaked up their kindness without a second thought.

Now, Hugh had seen the error of his ways and was filled with regret.

He yearned to be part of this family again, but it seemed like the chance had slipped through his fingers.

Leaning on the sink, Hugh felt a sharp, stabbing pain in his heart.

"Hey, Hugh! You done in there?" Barry's voice came from outside, calling him for lunch.

Hugh quickly composed himself, trying to hide his inner turmoil from Bethan.

Back in the dining room, Barry eagerly pulled out the chair next to his sister. "Sit here, Hugh," he said.

Hugh looked at Barry and then lowered his eyes to hide the guilt welling up.
