Chapter 429 What Am I Supposed to Do
As soon as Bradley stepped into the room, he presented Hugh with a small suitcase. "A little something for you, Mr. Cavill," he said with a somewhat forced smile.
Hugh didn't even bother to take a look, let alone accept it. "No gain without pain, Mr. Field. Just cut to the chase," he replied bluntly.
Noticing Bradley standing there awkwardly with the suitcase still in hand, Jacob quickly intervened. He offered a cup of coffee and took the "gift" on Hugh's behalf.
Although he had no clue what was inside, he was certain it was something of great value, considering it was personally brought to Hugh.
Bradley took a seat across from Hugh and nervously rubbed his palms.
"Mr. Cavill, I'm here today to ask you to go easy on Ms. Ridley," he said, looking a bit embarrassed.
Hugh's expression turned rather thought-provoking. "You've gone to such great lengths, Mr. Field. You two must have quite a close relationship," he remarked.
Hearing Hugh's sarcastic comment, Bradley forced a smile and said, "You're joking, Mr. Cavill. I'm just helping a friend out with this."
Hugh didn't push the issue further.
Bradley continued, "My friend has hired a lawyer for Ms. Ridley. I've looked into the case before coming here. Admittedly, Ms. Ridley did do you wrong, but it's not serious enough to warrant harsh punishment. I hope you can be lenient and let this matter blow over."
Hugh calmly put down his water glass. "Since you say it's not that serious, let's follow the rules. I believe the law will be just," he said firmly, and then stood up.
Seeing that Hugh wasn't swayed, Bradley also got up.
He took out a check from his pocket, bent down, and placed it on the coffee table. "Mr. Cavill, this 60-million-dollar check is to pay off Ms. Ridley's debt. We're all in the same circle, so please give her a break," he pleaded.
Glancing down at the check, Hugh asked, "Do you think I'm after this money?" he asked with a hint of disdain.
Bradley wiped the sweat off his forehead. "To show my sincerity, the Field Group will cede that prime land on the east side of the city to you. What do you say?" he offered, trying to sound more convincing.
Hugh finally relented. "Since you're so determined to help your friend, I'll do you this favor, Mr. Field," he said.
Bradley let out a sigh of relief.
After Bradley left, Jacob was quite puzzled. "Putting up 60 million dollars and giving away that valuable land for a friend. Mr. Field sure is a loyal friend," he commented.
Hugh let out a scornful snort.
Back at his desk, Hugh checked the weather forecast for Canada on his phone. The temperature was expected to drop significantly tomorrow.
At this hour, Bethan was surely buried in her work. Hugh hesitated for a moment before sending her a text.
In the past, whenever he went on a business trip out of New York, Bethan would always send him sweet little messages.
Now, as he sat there, staring at his phone, waiting for a reply, Hugh finally understood how she must have felt back then.
Even just hearing her voice and chatting with her had become something he couldn't have.
Hugh sat silently at his desk, feeling a dull ache in his heart.
More than ten minutes passed, and there was still no reply from Bethan.
