Chapter 420 Crying
Bethan took a few rapid, deep breaths, gradually regaining her calm.
Meanwhile, Hugh stood right in front of her, clenching and unclenching his fists at his sides—his inner conflict was obvious.
After a long moment of indecision, he finally blurted out, "You've finally admitted it!"
Bethan's features chilled. "You too. You've finally owned up to remembering everything!"
A heavy silence fell as they locked eyes.
Hugh felt as if all the air had been abruptly yanked from his lungs.
Hugh felt suddenly out of breath. His body swayed violently, and he stumbled back a few feet before managing to steady himself.
With a pained look, he asked Bethan, "When did you first catch on?"
"Suspected it from the start, but I just couldn't believe it," Bethan replied.
Hugh dropped his gaze, then lifted his head slightly.
A wry smile appeared on his face as he shut his eyes, realizing he'd been living in a fantasy.
"Bethy, I'm sorry," he said.
Fear of loss and repeating past tragedies were no excuses for keeping the truth from her.
Bethan stepped closer, looking him straight in the eye. "Hugh, like it or not, we both remember every bit of the mess from our past lives."
That was the final straw for Hugh.
His eyes turned blood-red, and tears streamed down his face wordlessly.
He took two steps forward, gripping Bethan's shoulders tightly. "Bethy, I messed up in our past life. But this is a new start. I'm clean, inside and out. Can't we give it another go?"
Bethan's voice was steady. "Since this is a fresh start, why can't I pick someone new? Why do I have to be with you?"
She stared him down. "Do you think I'm that easy?"
Once again, they stared at each other.
Hugh was left standing there, completely at a loss.
His eyes were so bloodshot, and he opened his mouth but couldn't speak.
Seeing his helplessness, Bethan walked over to the roadside and stared off into the distance.
"Hugh, I don't wanna rehash our past-life beef. And I don't want to be all tangled up with you this time around," she said.
For the sake of everyone around them, there was no room for enmity.
"After you died last time, your grandpa couldn't take it and popped a bunch of sleeping pills. Your parents were wrecked and never bounced back. Gwen was the only one holding the Cavill family and the Cavill Group together. Good thing Mason was there for her day and night.
"You know your worth to the Cavills and the company. I just hope we all have good lives this time.
"I don't wanna talk about the past or who owes what. I just wanna live a life on my own terms."
Hugh stood close to Bethan.
Turning his head slightly, he fixed his red-rimmed eyes on her and blurted out, "The life you're after? It's a life without me!"
Bethan let out a long sigh. "You can have a place in it, sure, but you won't be the center of it."
