Noticing Silvia’s surprise, Yvette patted her shoulder with easy composure, as if resigned to her fate. “Your brother can be so persistent. Honestly, if I don’t say yes to him, he’ll just keep following me around. I really didn’t stand a chance.”
Yvette made it sound like Finn had hounded her into dating him, leaving her no choice in the matter. But beneath her mock annoyance, Silvia couldn’t help but pick up on a subtle sweetness in her tone.
She let out a quiet laugh. “My brother’s a good guy. If you’re with him, I know I can relax.”
Thinking back, it was probably that night Yvette got drunk—her brother stayed by her side the whole time, looking after her. That must have been what moved her.
Then Silvia glanced at her own life—a relationship in tatters.
Her thoughts drifted to Kent.
Their marriage was nothing but a business arrangement; even Nannie Spencer was being sent overseas this morning. Yet, despite all that, Silvia couldn’t shake the odd feeling inside her, as if there was still some invisible barrier between her and Kent.
“Got anything to drink?” Silvia asked suddenly.
“Yeah.” Yvette nodded, then hesitated and shook her head, eyeing Silvia with a conflicted look. “Silvia, you’re married now. You don’t have the same freedom you used to. If you start drinking like before, your husband might not be too happy.”
After all, some men simply don’t like their wives drinking.
Yvette was only looking out for her, not wanting to see Silvia and Kent argue over something so trivial.
Silvia understood what Yvette meant, but she just gave a half-hearted smile and waved her hand dismissively. “It’s fine. It’s just a drink—he has no say here.”
And even if he did, Silvia had no intention of listening.
Yvette gazed into Silvia’s beautiful eyes and, in that instant, understood everything.
After the chaos Shipley had caused today, it was no wonder Silvia was in a bad mood and wanted a drink.
