“Kent!”
Nannie stared at Kent in disbelief, her eyes wide and shimmering with shock. She could hardly process how cold he was being toward her; her lips trembled as she struggled to find her voice.
Tentatively, she reached out, trying to touch his hand, but Kent pulled away, avoiding her with a look as cold as glass.
There was no trace of the old warmth in his eyes now—none of the patience or gentleness she’d once known.
“Why have you changed so much?” Nannie shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks, her voice trembling. “We were never like this before! Ever since Silvia showed up, everything about you and me has changed completely! You promised my father you’d take care of me for the rest of my life!”
Kent hesitated, regret flickering in his eyes for just a second. “I did promise,” he said quietly, “but I meant I’d look after you as a sister.” He watched Nannie, feeling a rare pang of guilt.
Maybe he’d spoiled her too much over the years, let things slide that he shouldn’t have. The Nannie he remembered was nothing like this.
He forced himself to look away, narrowing his eyes as he regarded her with a hard edge. “Nannie,” he said, his voice cool and measured, “Lester’s leaving the country soon, too. I’m sending you with him. He’ll do everything he can to help you get better.”
Lester had originally planned to come back for Kent’s engagement party, but instead, he’d been called in to treat Nannie. With Lester busy these last few days, Nannie’s emotions had only grown more unstable.
“You really want to send me away, Kent?” Nannie looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears, her gaze flickering in the harsh fluorescent light.
“Yes,” Kent replied, his tone unyielding.
The word hit Nannie like ice water. Whatever hope or agitation she’d felt drained away, leaving her expression strangely calm. She just looked at Kent, silent for a long time, before the faintest curve appeared at the corners of her lips.
“If you’ve made up your mind, then I’ll do as you say,” she said softly. “Whatever you arrange, I’ll go along with it.”
