The man in the driver’s seat turned around, a grin spreading across his face as he looked right at Silvia. His voice was deep and rough. “Miss Ashford, I’m here on behalf of Mr. Parsons. He sent me to bring you home—see, he even gave me this car for the job.”
He wasn’t lying.
Silvia recognized Kent’s car immediately.
The wariness she’d felt at first faded a little. She nodded. “All right, let’s go, then.”
“Of course.”
He agreed with a nod, pressed his foot to the gas, and the car shot forward like a bullet from a gun.
Click.
Silvia heard the locks snap shut, but knowing this was Kent’s man, she didn’t worry. She settled back into her seat, mind already racing with thoughts of what needed to be done next.
With the city’s surveillance cameras, the police would probably track down that man in no time. Still, Silvia realized that while it was easy enough to find the culprit, uncovering whoever was pulling the strings behind him would be a much tougher job.
She let out a quiet sigh.
Time ticked by, but still, they hadn’t reached Chronos Gardens.
Silvia glanced out the window; the streets were growing more deserted, the scenery unfamiliar and increasingly remote. Her expression changed. She shot a glance at the driver.
He drove on, eyes fixed on the road, but he must have sensed Silvia watching. The corner of his mouth curled up. “Something wrong, Miss Ashford?”
“Where exactly are you taking me?”
Her tone was sharp, and she slipped her hand into her bag, fingers searching.
