The bakery owner hesitated, his words trailing off as if he couldn't quite bring himself to finish.
If the other party decided to press charges, or even take him to court, he knew he would lose. Worse yet, things could easily escalate into a criminal case.
The more he thought about it, the more uneasy he felt. He added, “If anything happens to your friend… I honestly don’t know how I could possibly make it right.”
“For now, she’s okay.” Silvia could tell from his anxious expression that he likely hadn’t known what was truly going on. She sighed inwardly, then asked, “Can you tell me who approached you about this?”
The owner’s face grew even more troubled. He fumbled in his pocket before pulling out a flash drive and pressing it into Silvia’s hand. “This is the security footage from that day. All I could see was that it was a man, but he was dressed head-to-toe in black, mask and all. I didn’t think much of it at the time, but now… tracking him down won’t be easy.”
Silvia frowned, accepting the drive. “Thank you.”
She didn’t linger at the bakery. Instead, she left quietly and returned straight to her office.
Alone at her desk, Silvia plugged in the flash drive and started going through the files. The video showed a man in a black hoodie and a surgical mask—his features completely obscured.
She zoomed in on the footage, but even at maximum magnification, there was no way to make out his face.
Silvia pressed her lips together, a chill running through her.
Someone had done all this on purpose. Someone was targeting her.
If that was the case, this couldn’t just be brushed aside. Silvia reached for her phone and called the police. She couldn’t just wait for Kent to investigate; it was time to let the law handle it.
After she filed the report, it didn’t take long for the police to arrive at her office.
Her coworkers, still at their desks, exchanged uneasy glances as officers entered the room. The gravity of the situation was becoming more and more apparent.
