The driver glanced between them—a man and a woman, clearly acquainted—and instantly filled in the blanks in his mind:

Irritated, the driver let out a disgruntled huff as he pulled the car over, waiting for traffic to clear. Then, grabbing Nannie by the arm, he marched her over to Kent.

He had to look up to meet Kent’s gaze—Kent radiated an effortless elegance, his clothes immaculate and expensive. The driver’s attitude turned sharp, bordering on confrontational as he squared his shoulders.

“You young people these days,” he scolded, “fine, argue all you want, but can’t you do it without being so reckless? If something happened, who’s to blame? Me?”

He’d just been minding his own business, driving along, when suddenly someone had tried to throw themselves in front of his car. The more he thought about it, the angrier and more rattled he felt.

Nannie, though, only smiled wider at the driver’s tirade. She kept her eyes fixed on Kent, as if she was waiting for him to finally lose his cool.

But Kent disappointed her.

He simply lowered his gaze, his voice cool and indifferent, an invisible pressure radiating from him.

“How much do you want for compensation?”

He knew where this was going and cut straight to the chase. The driver hadn’t expected the payout to come so easily; he took the money and practically bolted.

Once the bystander was gone, Kent’s attention fell back to Nannie. She was still smiling, but the innocence that had once colored her expression was gone.

She was having another episode.

Kent couldn’t just leave her wandering the streets alone. Glancing at his phone, he sent Silvia a quick message before turning to Nannie. “Come with me.”

Her smile grew even brighter, and she nodded, following in Kent’s footsteps, matching his pace.
