She had refused him.
The moment he heard her refusal, Zebulon's heart inexplicably tightened. He struggled to control his volume, keeping his voice low. “I said, come sit here.”
From what Naomi knew of him, this was a sign he was about to lose his temper.
Everyone was about to have a holiday meal together. Normally, Naomi's instinct would be to keep the peace and avoid a scene with him.
But... she was done putting up with him. Besides, today's meal was at his family's house. If he wanted to cause a scene, it would be his family that lost face.
With that thought, Naomi didn't move an inch.
The atmosphere grew tense as a silent stalemate settled over the table.
“Have some of this. It's quite good.”
But there was an exception. A man's deep, magnetic voice suddenly broke the silence. Everyone at the table watched as Lennon's elegant fingers used the serving utensils to place some stir-fried beef into Naomi's bowl.
Naomi stared at him, stunned.
Lennon acted as if nothing was wrong. “What is it?”
Naomi looked away. “N-nothing.”
Had he not noticed the strange atmosphere?
But there was nothing more to say. Thinking this, Naomi relaxed and used her fork to lift the beef he had placed in her bowl to her mouth.
“Mmm, it is really good.”
Savory, spicy, especially with the garlic shoots.
She quite liked it.
How did he know she liked spicy food?
Naomi's thoughts shifted, and she glanced at the person beside her. Lennon didn't notice her gaze; he was busy attending to the little one next to him.
“I want some too.”
The little one, annoyed that Lennon had only served the woman next to him and not him, grew anxious, vying for attention.
Before Lennon could speak, Naomi stepped in, turning to the boy. “This is too spicy for you. You can't have it. Ask Lennon to get you something else.”
“No, I want that!”
He was quite jealous.
