Naomi was taken aback, not expecting Nelson to be so direct.
Considering Patricia’s relationship with Luther, and the fact that Nelson was Luther’s friend, she didn’t want to make things awkward for everyone.
So she said, “No, I’m just not much of a talker. Please don’t misunderstand.”
Nelson pressed, “Are you not big on texting either?”
Naomi was surprised he was being so blunt.
She felt a pang of guilt, remembering that she had indeed ignored his previous messages.
“I’m sorry. I’ve been really busy lately and haven’t been checking my phone much.”
Seeing her look apologetic, Nelson saw an opening and pressed his advantage. “So, can you talk to me a bit more today?”
“Don’t worry, I don’t mean anything by it. It’s just that Luther and Patricia are having so much fun, and it feels a bit unfair for us to just sit here and eat in silence.”
“That guy promised to take me out for a feast, but it turns out I’m just a third wheel. Anyone would be annoyed, right?”
“Let’s just ignore them and have our own conversation, what do you say?”
Naomi wanted to refuse, but her polite upbringing stopped the words from coming out.
“What do you want to talk about?”
“How about your interests?”
Naomi hesitated, then said apologetically, “I don’t really have many interests…”
As they talked and got food, Patricia and Luther finally decided to get something to eat. They saw Nelson and Naomi walking together, looking quite harmonious.
Luther glanced at Patricia and smiled. “Your friend seems to be getting along well with Nelson.”
“Looks like they’re not the only third wheels tonight. We are too.”
Patricia wasn’t concerned. “Naomi’s a bit of an introvert. I hope your friend doesn’t overwhelm her.”
Luther chuckled and pulled Patricia closer. “Don’t worry, Nelson knows his limits. Come on, what do you want to eat? I’ll get it for you.”
