Patricia wavered. Luther was the only guy she'd had a crush on since starting college. And while she trusted Lennon—he was, after all, the guy Naomi seemed to be falling for—she remembered Naomi's taste in men, namely Zebulon, and her trust in Lennon's judgment suddenly plummeted.
Maybe she should just go and see.
If he really paid her back, it would at least show he was responsible. Maybe she could give him another chance.
With that thought, Patricia tidied herself up and walked over to pull off Naomi's headphones.
Naomi, assuming Patricia was about to bring up Lennon again, said immediately, “I'm writing my paper, it's a critical moment, whatever you have to say—”
“Relax, I'm not here to talk about Lennon. I'm heading out for a bit. Call me if you need anything.”
Naomi breathed a sigh of relief when she heard it wasn't about that.
But a bit of curiosity crept in. “Where are you going?”
Patricia said, “Luther's going to pay me back. I'm going to see if it's for real. That was over ten thousand dollars, you know. I've been stewing about getting it back.”
Even if her family was loaded, Patricia still felt the sting of throwing away that much money.
She had even considered reporting it to the police, but figured it probably wouldn't lead to anything and might just become campus-wide gossip, so she'd dropped the idea.
Now that Luther was offering to pay it back, Patricia felt a little thrill of joy.
His character was secondary; getting her money back was the most important thing.
“Be careful, then.”
Even though she was just going to get money, Naomi remembered what Lennon had said and still felt worried. “Why don't I go with you?”
Patricia waved her off. “Aren't you busy? Go on, finish your paper.”
Naomi was a double major and had far more papers to write than Patricia did.
Plus, she had her job to go to. She was stretched so thin she wished she could split herself in two.
Patricia didn't think anything bad could happen from just collecting money, so she declined Naomi's kind offer.
“Alright then. But stay alert, and call me or the police if anything happens.”
