When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 54

Nelly turned her head, just in time to see Jonah reach over and gently pluck a bit of lint from her hair. His face hovered so close to hers, his lips curving in that unfairly handsome way. “You’re the only heir to the Watson family fortune. You really don’t have to be afraid of anyone.”

Her heart tripped over itself. She felt her cheeks flush, though she had no idea why she was getting so flustered. Jonah was supposed to be her brother...

A sharp knock against the car window snapped her out of it.

It was Brody.

But then she remembered—he couldn’t actually see her through the tinted glass.

“Ms. Watson? I’m Brody Garland. Can we talk for a minute?”

The driver lowered the window just enough for Brody’s voice to drift in, calm and cool.

Nelly glanced at Jonah. He caught the look, then answered for her, his tone steady and unhurried. “If you have something to say, please say it here.”

Brody’s jaw tightened at the sound of another man’s voice.

Inside the car, Nelly sat perfectly still. She had no intention of responding herself.

That silhouette. Once again, it made Brody think of Nelly. The idea flickered through his mind, but he quickly brushed it off.

“The series of paintings you bought today belonged to my late mentor. They meant everything to him.” Brody’s voice lost its usual sharpness. “If you’d consider it, maybe you could name a price. I’d like to borrow them for a few days, just so I can remember him.”

Nelly pressed her lips together and gave Jonah a quick wink.

Jonah didn’t even blink. “Your loyalty is admirable, Mr. Garland. But the paintings are too delicate to loan out. I hope you can understand.”

He signaled to the driver, who started the car.

Brody slapped his palm against the window.
