When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 53

When Nelly saw Brody drive the price up that high, she couldn’t help but laugh.

“A few paintings going for nearly a hundred million... Has Brody lost it?” she joked.

Jonah, standing beside her, spoke in a low voice. “Maybe. He’s always been kind of crazy when it comes to the girl he cares about.”

Nelly just shrugged, her tone light and a little mocking, like none of this really mattered to her.

She started to raise her paddle again, but Jonah pressed his hand gently on hers. Just a few seconds later, he let go.

Nelly understood what Jonah was worried about, but the fact that he didn’t stop her completely was his way of showing trust.

“He’s going to lose big this time,” Jonah muttered.

Nelly just smiled and raised her paddle without hesitation.

Brody’s bid was matched again. At this point, raising the price any higher was just throwing money away.

Sheila’s nerves were shot. She wasn’t even thinking about her father’s wishes anymore. All she could feel was her heart racing as the numbers climbed.

Brody looked absolutely cold, his whole presence giving off a kind of quiet, dangerous energy.

Everyone in the room was waiting to see what he’d do next. Even the auctioneer started calling out bids more slowly, almost as if he was giving Brody time to make up his mind.

In the end, Brody didn’t raise his paddle again.

The “Return” series was sold for eighty million to the woman at the front of the room.

The organizers could barely contain their excitement. The event was a huge success.
