Even after all these years, even though the danger had long passed, Sheila still worried about him. She always would.
They pulled up to her house. Brody didn’t make a move to get out, but Sheila leaned over anyway. “Why don’t you come in for a while? You really don’t look well.”
“Carrie’s waiting for me at home.”
“Brody… let me take care of you and Carrie. Please. Just let me.”
Looking at Brody’s pale face, Sheila felt her heart ache. She couldn’t hold back anymore. After everything, after all those years apart, she’d come full circle and ended up right back here, by his side. He had a family, sure, but she knew he didn’t love that woman. Even Carrie, the one thing keeping them apart, had finally accepted her.
Brody turned to look at her, his brows drawn together. “I’m supposed to take care of you. I promised your father I would.”
Sheila shook her head. “That’s not what I want, Brody. I don’t want you to treat me like some obligation. I want us to be real with each other. You treat me differently, you always have. You care about me too, don’t you?”
Before he could answer, she reached out and hugged him tight.
Brody immediately pushed her away. “You’re getting it wrong. All I feel for you is responsibility. I told you before, you shouldn’t give your love to someone like me.”
“How could I not?” Sheila’s voice trembled. “You have my father’s heart in your chest. That’s the only piece of my family I have left. If I can’t love you, then who else is there for me?”
