When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 348

Nelly stepped out of the sitting room, glancing around for Jonah without even thinking about it. He was nowhere to be seen.

“Nelly.”

Nicholas’s voice came from behind her. He walked over, catching her attention. “You did really well today. Better than I expected, honestly. I might have to take back some of the things I said before.”

“Thank you, Uncle Nicholas,” Nelly answered politely.

“Don’t get too comfortable, though. This was just the first test. Even if you do manage to secure a strong position in the Watson family, your ending won’t be any better than Christopher’s.”

Nelly blinked, trying to make sense of what he was saying.

What did he mean by Christopher’s ending?

Before she could figure it out, Nicholas had already walked off, leaving her with more questions than answers. A few board members came out after him, all much warmer than before, offering their congratulations.

Today, Nelly had completed the first part of the inheritance requirements. Her net worth had officially crossed into the hundreds of millions. But only a small portion of the Watson Corporation’s board had even shown up, and those who did were mostly on the fringes.

It was obvious. No matter how well she performed, Nelly still wasn’t really accepted by the Watsons.

As she left the old Watson estate, she spotted Felix waiting outside.

Nancy saw him, too, and immediately shot him a look before getting into the car without a word.

“You really do love to gamble. Just like your father,” Felix said quietly, watching Nancy disappear inside the car.

Nelly stood straight, eyes on the sky that was growing darker by the minute. “I’m nothing like him. At least I know my life will turn out better.”

“Even if Nancy helped you today, keeping her close is just going to bring you trouble.”

Nelly turned her gaze to Felix, cool and unreadable. “Uncle Felix, you owe Nancy. I’ve helped you make it up to her. So, you’ll help me this time, right?”

Felix looked surprised, then let out a low laugh.
