That guess didn’t really make sense. “Well, let’s talk about it later.” They both gave up for now. The night wasn’t over anyway. They still had the afterparty to get through, a big deal with all the major brand owners in attendance.
When Nelly made her way backstage, she spotted Brody already there. He was lounging on the couch, legs crossed, flipping through the latest Never collection catalog like he owned the place. The table in front of him was covered in tea and pastries, and Nelly’s assistant and the other staff stood nearby, looking like they were just waiting for his orders. He was only a guest here, but somehow he seemed more in charge than Nelly herself.
“Who let him in?” Nelly pressed her fingers to her forehead, sending a sharp glare at her assistant.
“Ms. Stewart, isn’t he… your friend?” the assistant whispered, almost too quiet to hear. Brody’s watch was obviously expensive, and the way he carried himself was anything but ordinary. He’d pulled off a rescue act for Nelly on the runway too. Everyone had seen him carry her offstage.
“When did I ever say he could come back here? Didn’t I make it clear that unauthorized people aren’t allowed?” Nelly snapped, her patience disappearing.
Nancy was still nearby. She saw Brody right away, but maybe out of respect for Nelly, she pretended not to notice and slipped away to change her clothes.
The assistant dropped her head, obviously bracing for a scolding.
Nelly turned her attention to Brody. He acted like he hadn’t heard a thing, still sunk into the couch, completely unbothered. She marched over and yanked the catalog out of his hands. “You need to leave. This is my workspace, and you’re not welcome here.”
The way everyone was looking at them made Nelly’s irritation spike even higher.
“You’ve got a banquet coming up, don’t you? I’m starving. Let’s go together.”
