When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 325

Brody got home late in the evening. Marian had already put Carrie to bed. After checking on his daughter, he found Marian in the hallway.

“She hasn’t come back even once?”

As soon as he spoke, Marian knew exactly who he meant. “You mean… Mrs. Garland?”

Brody didn’t reply. His face was hard, almost unreadable.

Marian hesitated, but told the truth. “No, she hasn’t come back at all.”

She’d made sure all of Nelly’s clothes were washed and put away, and cleaned her room every day. She honestly believed that once Brody was back, Nelly would come home too.

A few days ago, Tina had stopped by. She’d spent a long time poking around Nelly’s room before telling Marian to pack up all of Nelly’s things. Since Nelly wasn’t coming home, it was time for a new lady of the house.

Marian figured Tina was just upset and ignored her.

Brody let out a bitter snort, so cold it seemed to suck all the warmth from the room.

People called him heartless, but Nelly was the one who could really freeze someone out.

The tension in the air was heavy. Marian wanted to say something, but thought better of it and kept quiet.

Brody stood in front of Nelly’s door for a long time. Finally, he walked away.

He felt restless, too wound up to sleep. Coming home was supposed to help, but all he could do was lie awake.

Tina’s words echoed in his mind. “Nelly found herself a better deal with the Watson family. That’s why she can treat you like this. She’s willing to leave her own daughter behind just to get rid of you…”

Then Sheila’s voice: “Brody, Tina said the man hanging around Nelly is from the Watsons. Did she really cheat on you?”

Their voices wouldn’t stop repeating in his head.

He closed his eyes and saw it all again—him and Nelly in the hospital, the way she looked at him in those final moments. Her eyes were steady and calm. He couldn’t get it out of his mind.
