“Yes, it was all fake.”
Jonah’s voice was soft, gentle even, but it shattered the last bit of hope Nancy had left. In that moment, the final light in her world flickered out.
Afterward, Felix sent Nancy to study abroad, keeping a close eye on everything she did. Maybe Jonah’s words had hit her too hard, because she lost interest in her studies and drifted into the modeling scene not long after. That’s when she started hanging out with Rudy.
With Britney constantly stirring things up, whatever bond Nancy and Felix had left as father and daughter snapped completely. Felix, not wanting their family drama to become public gossip, eventually stopped trying to control Nancy at all.
…
Night deepened outside, turning the reflections in the glass window into something almost magical. Jonah’s eyes looked empty as he glanced at Nelly, a small, out-of-place smile tugging at his lips.
“That’s the whole story. Now you know what kind of person I really am.”
He was ready for Nelly to hate him. If he was honest, he was colder and more heartless than Nancy had ever been. By Nelly’s standards, he was the last person she should ever trust.
Nelly sat there, half her face hidden in shadow, the other half touched by the faint glow from outside. Her expression was tense, her brow furrowed. She stayed quiet, letting his words settle, but didn’t know what to say.
Jonah could almost hear her thoughts in the silence. He walked over, brushing his fingers lightly across the neat piles of documents on the table.
“So, you didn’t do anything to Nancy. I’m the one she wants revenge on. I’m the one who hurt her. You just got caught in the middle. You don’t need to feel guilty.”
“If you’d rather not see me anymore, I’ll stay out of your life.”
His voice was calm, still as gentle as it used to be.
Jonah turned to leave. He made it all the way to the door before Nelly finally spoke.
