Nancy couldn’t shake the way that man stared at her. Every time their eyes met, she felt uneasy, almost sick. But Felix didn’t seem to care at all. Instead, he insisted she sit right next to the man at dinner. He said her mother and this man had been close friends back in the day, and that Nancy should try to talk to him more.
Later that night, the man got completely wasted and wound up staying over at Felix’s place.
Felix asked Nancy to bring him some water. She didn’t want to, but she did as she was told. As she reached the guest room, she heard the man talking on the phone. He was bragging, laughing, and then he started talking about her mother. The words made her freeze.
That’s when she realized—the night before her mother died, she’d been with this man. He was the last person to see her alive. Suddenly, it all clicked. This man had slept with her mother.
Nancy’s world tilted. Grief and anger crashed over her all at once, drowning every bit of reason she had left. She stumbled back to her room and dug through her things until she found it—a small dagger. It’s something her mother gave her for her birthday when she was little. She remembered how her mom had let her pick out the colored gems on the handle.
She crept back to the guest room. The man was still drunk, barely aware of what was going on. Nancy played it cool, coaxing him onto the bed, mumbling something about a game, and tied his hands and feet to the bedposts. He just laughed and closed his eyes, thinking it was all for fun.
Nancy stared at him, her heart pounding in her chest. She hated him. She hated everything he’d done. She gripped the dagger, ready to kill him.
“Nancy!” Jonah’s voice cut through the room, sharp and desperate.
She flinched, just for a second, and that was all it took. The man’s eyes flew open and he started thrashing, screaming. Jonah tried to pull her back, but she fought him off. In the struggle, the dagger slipped. She felt it sink into Jonah’s stomach. His blood was suddenly everywhere—on her hands, dripping onto the floor. The shock of it snapped her out of the rage.
