When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 308

Nancy always remembered her mother as the picture of elegance. She was beautiful, always perfectly dressed, and never far from Nancy’s father. They were the kind of couple people noticed, always together, but even as a child, Nancy could see the sadness that never left her mother’s eyes.

After her mother passed away, the butler quietly told Nancy that her mom had left some belongings and letters for her. But when Nancy tried to collect them, Felix had already ordered everything to be thrown away.

Felix told Nancy that her mother had taken her own life. He said the belongings she left behind would only bring bad luck, and urged Nancy to forget the past, to be strong, and to never end up like her mother.

That was the moment Nancy started to hate her father. She couldn’t help but doubt what really happened to her mom.

Maybe Felix noticed her suspicion, because soon after, he decided to keep Nancy home all the time, saying it was for her own well-being. Tutors came to teach her at the house, and Jonah was assigned to look after her.

But Nancy knew it wasn’t about care, not really. It felt more like she was being watched.

She understood exactly what Felix was doing. So of course, she never gave Jonah the time of day. She treated him coldly, refusing to trust him.

Jonah stayed by her side for two whole years. He was more attentive than anyone else in the house, always gentle and thoughtful. He took care of everything for Nancy, from her schoolwork to her daily life, even going out of his way to support her hobbies and bring her little surprises to make her smile.

But for Nancy, none of it mattered. Jonah was Felix’s person. No matter how nice he seemed, she believed it was all fake.

Everything changed the night Felix left the country on business.

Nancy managed to get her hands on the key to Felix’s study safe. She was determined to find out what her father was hiding, to finally learn the truth about her mother’s death.

But Felix came home unexpectedly late that night, almost as if he knew what she was up to.

Just when Nancy was about to get caught, Jonah appeared out of nowhere and stopped Felix at the door, giving Nancy enough time to slip away.

At first, Nancy thought it was just a lucky coincidence. But later, when Felix questioned her about a hair tie found in his study, Jonah stepped in before Nancy could say anything. He claimed he had found the hair tie earlier and accidentally dropped it while looking for a file in Felix’s office.
