A soft sound brushed past her ear.
Nancy frowned, her eyes fluttering open just as Jonah reached behind her, quietly slipping the dagger free.
He slid it into its ornate sheath, then held it out to her, his hand steady and sure.
“This is yours. I’m returning it to you.”
Nancy looked down. The moment her gaze landed on the dagger, her eyes stung with tears. It felt like something inside her had split wide open, leaving her raw and bleeding.
The dagger was beautifully crafted, every detail exquisite. The gemstones on the hilt were clouded with dust, but they still caught the light, glittering faintly.
Her hands shook as she traced the carved patterns along the handle, feeling the weight of memories pressed deep into every groove.
Jonah turned to go, but Nancy couldn’t let him walk away like this. “What is that supposed to mean?” she called after him.
She had expected him to explode, to yell at her, to curse her, to hate her. She had braced herself for his anger, thinking maybe she needed it, maybe it was what she deserved.
But Jonah just surprised her, like he always did.
Had he really come all this way just to return her dagger?
“Nelly wanted me to tell you she’ll handle things. Don’t worry about it. She’s keeping her promise to you.”
He paused, then added, “And stop reading all that stuff online. If getting revenge on me was supposed to make you happy, you shouldn’t look so miserable.”
He didn’t wait for her reply. He just left, not once looking back.
Nancy’s lips parted, but no words came out. Suddenly, she felt hollow, swallowed up by a wave of emptiness that made her feel ridiculous. Was this what she’d been waiting for?
Nelly didn’t get a break until evening, finally collapsing into her office chair with a sigh.
The brand launch was right around the corner. Time was running out. The main venue had only given her two days, and she had spent most of today smoothing things over with other partners.
