When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 303

Rudy always tried to keep his distance with Nancy, treating her in a way that was different from everyone else. He put her first, spoiled her without holding back, and let himself play the role of a hopeless romantic, just to see what it felt like to love someone who didn’t love him back. But no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t force himself to truly fall for her.

Tonight though, something felt different. Nancy’s latest scandal should have made him want to walk away, but as he watched her, he felt this strange ache in his chest. Instead of being repulsed, he just wanted to take care of her even more.

He took a look around and noticed how messy her usually spotless place was. Clothes were scattered across the floor. Empty cans and cigarette butts were everywhere, from the table down to the carpet. He slipped off his jacket, rolled up his sleeves, and grabbed some cleaning supplies. He gave the floor a quick sweep and cleared away the cups and trash from the table.

Nancy had been drinking. By the time it got late, she barely noticed what Rudy was doing. She just drifted off to sleep, not caring about anything else.

When she opened her eyes again, she realized someone had draped a blanket over her. Rudy was sitting on the floor, leaning against the side of the couch, scrolling through his phone, and quietly keeping her company.

She glanced at the window and saw the sky was getting lighter. Morning was on its way. Looking around, she noticed the mess from last night was gone, everything looking neat again.

“Rudy, why are you still here?” Nancy suddenly sat up, her nerves on edge. Last night, she’d been too out of it to care. Now, with her mind clear, she felt a cold shiver run through her.

“Is Vincent really that good-looking? Why are all his fans so determined to defend him?” Rudy asked, his voice soft, almost like he was talking to himself instead of her.

“He’s the latest rising star. Super popular. Unless there’s real proof against him, his fans are always going to take his side,” Nancy replied, sounding almost bored. Stuff like this happened all the time in the entertainment industry. The bigger the star, the more likely their fans would go to war for them. If you had more fans, your rivals would just end up getting attacked online.
