Nancy didn’t fight back this time.
After Rudy was done with her and tossed her onto the sofa, she sat up, wiped the corner of her mouth, and spoke in a calm voice. “I did it behind your back. Why would I tell you anything?”
Rudy’s anger spiked. Hearing how unmoved she sounded, he stormed over and grabbed her face.
Nancy just stared at him, her eyes cold and empty, not a flicker of emotion there. She was so numb, there was nothing for him to feed off.
Eventually, Rudy let go of her with clenched teeth.
“Nancy, you’re finished now. Your name is ruined. Any hope you had for the Watson family inheritance is gone.”
“Felix is no better than the rest, and Michael never cared about me. I’ve been cast out by the Watson family for a long time,” Nancy answered softly. She had already stopped hoping for anything from them.
If you never really had something, you couldn’t lose it.
She’d given up on the Watson family ages ago, but she just couldn’t stop fighting until now. Maybe this was for the best. Maybe this would finally let her give up for good. It almost felt like freedom.
“Even if you couldn’t win, you didn’t have to go this far…” Rudy shook his head, still unable to make sense of it.
He knew that with this scandal, Nelly’s big launch was doomed. Their business partners would pull out, that was for sure.
Even if Nelly managed to launch her brand, everyone would be watching Nancy instead. Nelly’s first project for the Watson family would be a total mess.
But this would hurt Nancy just as much. She was burning her own bridges. None of it seemed worth it.
“I just wanted to see what she would do,” Nancy said quietly, curling up in the corner of the sofa.
She hugged her knees to her chest, her slender body folded in on itself, like a cat hiding in the shadows—fragile and scared, but with something dangerous hidden underneath.
“Did you want to see what she would do, or what Jonah would do?” Rudy asked, tugging at his tie with a bitter laugh.
He sounded like he finally got it. “Nancy, Nelly is only using you to make herself look loyal and noble. And Jonah is never going to care about you.”
“This move was just stupid.”
