When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 249

“That’s me. Jude said Nicholas sent you to find me?”

Ben was the first to speak. Nelly was still trying to get her thoughts in order, so she just nodded.

Ben let out a long sigh. As he took off his gloves and shrugged out of his coat, he stepped into the elevator. “Come on.”

Nelly hesitated, glancing back toward Brody’s hospital room.

Jude gave her a reassuring smile. “Go ahead. Mr. Brown wants to talk to you. I’ll stay here. He’ll be alright.”

Jude was close with her mother, so Nelly trusted him, at least a little. Besides, she was still stuck in the underground city. She didn’t really have a choice.

She nodded to Jude, whispered a quick thanks, and followed Ben.

He led her to another floor. Here, the hallway opened up into a maze of glass walls and gleaming machines. Everything looked high-tech, clinical, and a little intimidating. This was obviously his turf.

Ben guided her all the way to his office. Once inside, he slipped off his lab coat, leaving just a fitted black tee that showed off a surprisingly lean, muscular frame. He might have been older and in hiding, but Ben was nothing like the fearful, broken man she’d pictured in her mind.

“Grab a seat,” Ben said, his back to her as he hung up his coat.

He turned and started fussing with some medical equipment on the desk, checking and organizing things.

Nelly watched him for a moment. The silence stretched between them until Ben finally broke it. “Ask whatever you want. We don’t have much time.”

“You knew that I’m from the Watson family.”

She remembered that first night, how Ben had been the one she’d run into.
