When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 228

“Are you sure you’ve got the right person? I don’t even know where I am. You dragged me here against my will.”

Nelly knew it wouldn’t make any difference, but she still tried. She had to say something.

Neither the masked man nor Brody looked convinced.

“If you say so. Good luck to you both.”

The car rolled to a stop. The masked man waved them out, and his people had already opened the doors.

Nelly wanted to argue, but there was no time. She and Brody were pushed out of the car, no questions asked.

Brody stumbled, almost falling, but Nelly caught his arm just in time.

“Watch your step.”

If either of them got hurt here, nobody was coming to help.

Brody looked annoyed and twisted his empty wrist. He regretted tossing his watch now.

The car sped away, and the heavy doors to Zone D slammed shut behind them.

They were led to the casino entrance and told to register. Each of them got a numbered tag locked around their neck. Those tags were now their only identity here. Every win, every loss, it all went on the tag.

If they lost everything, the tag would be taken away, and they’d lose the right to stay. Everyone knew what happened after that.

Nelly had prepared herself for this, but standing at the edge, she was still scared. Her fingers shook as she touched the cold tag at her throat.

At least she had a backup plan with Gregory. If she disappeared for two days, he’d find a way to get into the underground and rescue her.

She trusted him. For now, she needed to keep calm and find Ben. That was the only thing that mattered.
