When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 227

Zone A was the highest tier.

“Anyone who comes to the underground city faces only two possible endings. Either you lose everything and get stuck here for life, or you win and get to walk away. But if you want to be a winner, you have to fight your way up from Zone D all the way to Zone A.”

The masked man’s explanation matched almost exactly what Gregory had told her before.

The casino was the heart of the underground city, and it had swallowed up more than its fair share of desperate people. Most of the folks who ended up here, unless they were one of the rare ones, ended up losing it all. If you weren’t lucky, you became either a slave or a corpse, buried beneath this place forever.

You could find every kind of game here. People were willing to risk everything just for a chance to climb their way out, but almost nobody actually made it to the finish line.

And of course, you couldn’t gamble without something to wager.

If you wanted to play, you could put up anything as a stake. Money, valuables, even your life.

Nelly glanced over and saw Brody’s face go pale. This place was way rougher and more ruthless than he’d imagined. It was obvious he was in way over his head.

She, on the other hand, had come prepared. She still had some valuables tucked away, enough to get them started at least. But actually winning all the way to the top? The chances were close to zero.

“So, are you two ready?”

The masked man finished his rundown of the rules just as their car rolled into Zone D.

Zone D was like a huge marketplace, crowded and chaotic, with gambling tables everywhere and shops flashing red and green lights where you could exchange chips. The place was packed, easily as busy as any street above ground.

Nelly took in the scene and her stomach dropped. No wonder Ben had chosen to hide here. Finding a person in this mess would be nearly impossible. She’d probably get swallowed up by the chaos before she even got close.
