Brody took a slow, steady breath. His voice came out cool and even.
That morning, he’d asked Alan to track Nelly’s schedule. By the time he came looking for her, he had already made up his mind. He wasn’t going to go through with the divorce.
Love had always been a mystery to him. He’d never really felt it before, never figured out what it meant to care for someone that deeply.
But now, something in him clicked.
His heart simply wouldn’t listen to reason anymore. Somewhere along the way, his feelings for Nelly had grown too strong to ignore.
“Brody.” Nelly’s voice sounded shaky.
Something felt off. Her head was spinning, and she stumbled over to him.
Brody shot up and caught her just in time. “What’s wrong? Are you okay?” He wrapped his arms around her, steadying her as she swayed.
He started toward the door, wanting to get her out of there, but it wouldn’t open. He tried the handle again, pressed the call button, and knocked hard, but there was only silence. The hallway outside was completely quiet, almost like the world had gone still. Even the lights seemed dimmer.
A wave of anxiety settled over Nelly. Her eyelids felt so heavy, but she forced herself to look up at Brody. “How did… how did you find me?”
Brody hesitated, then answered, “I had Alan check your whereabouts. He tracked you to your hotel.”
He hadn’t wanted to admit it, but seeing how she was right now, he felt something was very wrong.
He’d only arrived in the city that night. At first, he’d planned to meet her at the hotel. Then he saw her leave, dressed to go out, so he decided to follow. When she headed into a place that looked suspicious, he went in after her.
It was weird for Nelly to come all this way just to show up at a place like this, now that he thought about it.
