When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 222

Brody’s voice didn’t waver, each word slow and serious, like he was laying everything out on the line.

Nelly felt her heart clench, a sudden, sharp ache that broke right through the walls she’d built up. All the cold she’d kept buried inside spilled out, making her shiver.

His words left her reeling. It was like she’d been dragged right back to those endless, lonely nights spent waiting for him. All those evenings lying awake, hoping he’d show her just a little bit of care. She’d waited for a promise that never came. Now, when he finally said something, everything had changed. She didn’t want it anymore. All she felt was bitterness.

Her eyes stung and turned red, but before she could say anything, Brody spoke again. “Don’t divorce me. For Carrie. Can’t we go back to the way things were?”

He was afraid she’d say no, so he used Carrie as an excuse, but this time he sounded almost gentle, like he was actually asking her instead of ordering.

He was finally trying to think about her feelings for once, not just his own.

So, it was all for Carrie. That was it. Nelly’s heart twisted all over again. She stared at Brody, unable to say a word, her mind a mess.

After a long, tense pause, she forced a small, tired smile. “You think it’s that easy? We can’t go back. We’re way past that.”

No one dared step in when Nelly and Brody argued. Especially not after Brody’s watch was handed over, which was enough money for a lifetime for anyone in that room.

The manager tried to hustle everyone out. Nelly tried to get someone’s attention, but Brody calmly slipped a ring off his finger. It was luxury, worth enough to keep the manager quiet.

“Take your time. We won’t bother you.” The manager took the ring, bowed, and left, ignoring Nelly’s calls like he couldn’t even hear her.

“Stop yelling. Couples fight. It’s normal. They’re not stupid,” Brody said once everyone was gone. Only then did he finally let go of her.

Nelly’s face burned. This was a disaster. Her whole plan was ruined.

“Brody, what is wrong with you? Why do you always have to ruin things for me? Can’t we just leave each other alone?”

“No.”
