Her answer didn’t change at all. She was just as stubborn as before.
“You’re still not calm enough,” Kenneth said with a sigh, his voice gentle but just a little frustrated. He reached out and smoothed Emily’s hair, then spoke with unusual tenderness, “Just rest for a while, okay?”
Emily gave him a look that screamed “I can’t even deal with you right now.”
...
The doctor had already come and checked her out. There was nothing wrong, no real injury, just a scare. Everyone finally let go of the breath they’d all been holding.
“Emily, are you sure you’re alright?”
Jarrod had rushed up from downstairs the moment he heard, bursting into the room just as Kenneth was handing Emily a glass of water—about to help her take her medication.
Seeing Kenneth, Jarrod’s expression immediately soured. He didn’t even bother to hide his bad mood this time.
“What are you doing here?” His politeness was gone, and he looked downright annoyed.
“I’m protecting my girl from people who don’t know their limits,” Kenneth replied, glancing at Jarrod, his words leaving Jarrod completely speechless.
He wanted so badly to call Kenneth out, but Emily had made him promise not to say anything. If he hadn’t agreed to that, Kenneth would already know everything… and then let’s see if he’d still look so confident.
“I’m fine,” Emily said with a quiet smile. She looked around at everyone, her words soft. “Thank you all for everything. You should go back and get some rest.”
If only she’d known Kenneth was coming to Brenland, she wouldn’t have hurried her schedule so much. There was still one last scene tomorrow.
“You rest too, Emily,” Jarrod said, though he seemed to direct the words more at Kenneth, who made no move to leave. Jarrod’s fists clenched at his sides.
With no other choice, and clearly annoyed, he left with everyone else. All the way down the hall, he was silently wishing Emily would stop liking Kenneth so much.
“You’re still here?”
Emily noticed Kenneth hadn’t budged and stood up, looking at him with a loaded stare. Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “We’re just friends. Isn’t it a little weird for you to hang around?”
