Brandon shook his head fast, trying to prove himself. “It wasn’t me, Skeleton. I’ve been with you for years. Why would I ever team up with the cops?”
“Yeah, not you. Then it must be you,” Skeleton said, pointing straight at Jace.
Jace didn’t flinch. He held Skeleton’s gaze, his eyes hard and cold. Then he reached up and pulled a tiny bug from the back of his head. “You’re right. It’s me. Skeleton, everything you just said was sent straight to the police. My dad’s been carrying the weight of that drug dealer accusation for years. I’m here to clear his name. He never had a chance to speak for himself, so I’ll do it for him. He was a police officer.”
Brandon’s jaw dropped. “Jace, your father was…”
Skeleton’s face twisted. “I always thought your eyes looked familiar. So you’re his son.”
Jace nodded. “Yeah. He’s my father.”
Brandon’s voice shook. “Jace, you lied to me. You never really wanted to marry my daughter, did you? You just used me to get close to Skeleton.” The realization hit him all at once. This had been Jace’s plan from the start.
Suddenly, sirens blared outside. Dozens of police cars pulled up, lights flashing. Uniformed officers jumped out, guns ready, surrounding the building. At the front, an older cop, Richard, grabbed a megaphone. “Skeleton, Brandon, you’re surrounded. Surrender now. The law is waiting for you.”
One of Skeleton’s men started to panic. “Skeleton, what do we do? We’re trapped.”
Skeleton glared at Jace, his eyes full of hate. “You little bastard. I can’t believe I’m losing to you. I’ll never surrender. We’re fighting our way out!”
Chaos exploded. Gunfire echoed through the building.
Richard found Jace, grabbed his arm, and tried to pull him away. “Kid, come on. It’s not safe here.”
Jace looked over at Skeleton, who was blasting his way through the cops with a couple of his guys and some heavy firepower. Jace’s voice was steely. “I’m not leaving. My dad let him escape once. It won’t happen again.”
