Jace knew he was being selfish. He had nothing to offer her, but he still held her close, terrified of letting her go.
Lilly slipped her arms around his neck. “Jace, you’re only allowed to be mine. Got it?”
Only mine. The words said everything about how much she wanted him.
Jace gently cradled the back of her head and kissed her. It was soft, barely more than a brush, over almost before it started. Lilly relaxed against his chest, content to stay just like that.
“Lilly, get some sleep,” Jace whispered.
She was tired. Her eyes closed and she drifted off.
When Lilly woke up, Jace was already gone. It was the first day of Victoria’s final exams. Lilly walked her to the entrance, wished her luck, and waited outside all day. The exams went well. When Victoria came out, she said she was pretty sure she’d nearly aced it.
Jace had been the top student in the whole province back when he took those exams. Victoria reminded Lilly so much of her brother. She had nothing but faith in her.
The next day, Lilly brought Victoria to school again. She was waiting outside when a flashy sports car pulled up and Lucas jumped out.
He jogged over, looking impatient. “Lilly, why are you still hanging around here?”
Lilly didn’t even want to talk to him. “Lucas, I’m waiting for Victoria to finish her exam. This is a test center, so keep it down, and if you’re not here for anything important, just leave.”
Lucas actually laughed at her cold attitude. “Lilly, you’re so nice to Jace’s little sister, but do you have any idea what Jace is up to right now? You’re just making a fool of yourself.”
Lucas had tried this before. Lilly was used to his games. She didn’t even bother looking at him. “Lucas, what is it this time? Is Jace gambling again? Fine, I get it. You can stop now.”
